Yesterday, Senator McCain held a conference call with a number of conservative bloggers; high on the list of topics was immigration. Much of the post-call coverage has centered around Senator McCain's humorous comments about one of his opponent's multiple positions on immigration reform; but there was also a substantive discussion of why he is supporting the current compromise in the Senate. There has been a lot of traffic on this blog over the last few days about the Senate compromise. Many have expressed their opposition and we at McCain 2008 are glad to provide a forum for open and honest discussion of this and other issues about which people feel passionately. One thing on which we all agree – our immigration system is fundamentally broken and the status quo is not acceptable. The current system perpetuates a de facto amnesty. It's a matter of maintaining our economic prosperity but also strengthening America's national security, which is why the head of the Department of Homeland Secretary strongly supports the bill.
